My mixed media original one-of-a-kind artwork is entitled The Deepest Blue Skies in My Violet Dreams. This artwork is inspired by my love of nature's colours, textures and patterns. There are times in my life when I dream a lot. I think it's when I'm working through something subconsciously... when something is bothering me, or when I'm struggling with a decision or a situation... sometimes my dreams are so deep that when I wake up, it takes me a few minutes to realise that what I thought was reality is just a dream... but the emotions I felt in that dream linger on throughout the day... And yet, there are elements in my dreams that are clues that this experience that feels so true is just a dream. Often I dream that I'm flying. Or that I can "skip" and jump so high that I basically can run like a gazelle... there's always a sense of movement and touching the sky... the never-ending sky... Before I moved to London, I spend 3 months in New Mexico. It was a strange time in my life when I was about to move countries and take on new adventures. What struck me most about that fantastic landscape is the skies that felt so big. They felt so immense and so overpowering... everywhere I looked, there was just this blue sky... and I was in awe. It is this sense of awe, which is almost like being in a dream. It is this sense of dream-like awe that I wanted to capture with this artwork.
This painting is part of my Woven Contemplation series, inspired by the history and tradition of textiles. I find textiles endlessly comforting, whether they are a jumper knitted by my mother, a scarf that I've knitted, or some Christmas tree ornaments that I've hand stitched and embroidered. Textiles are comforting and historic. From a visual perspective, textiles have so much texture and pattern, and this is part of what I was trying to evoke with these textile-inspired series of artworks.
I strive to create artwork that is beautiful and inspiring... artwork that transports the viewer into another world... art that is calming and serene but also full of life and energy. I adore strong colours that jump out of the painting and grab attention. The bolder the better! I've created this artwork using inks, acrylic paint and water on luxury heavyweight Fabriano watercolour paper. The thickness and texture of this specialty paper allow the inks, paint and water to play together and enable me to create some wonderful patterns and textures. To add some additional detail and interest to this artwork, I've also used some white pencil and paint pen.
I am driven by a need to create. I’m happiest when I’m creating something beautiful – something that inspires, lifts up and brings joy and colour to the world. Something that hopefully others love to look at and gives them joy.
