I am Vera Blagev and I am a Surrey based, nature inspired abstract artist. Having travelled to more than 50 countries, lived in three of them, and spent nearly 10 years in London, I now call the beautiful Surrey Hills (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England) my home. Over the years, I have worked with various media - from coloured pencils and watercolours to pastels, oil and acrylic and even ceramics. I have actively exhibited my work in the UK and the USA and am a grant recipient from the Washington DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
I am interested in creating artwork that is fundamentally unquestionably beautiful. Focusing on what is most inspiring, calming and aesthetically pleasing in this world, natures as a theme comes back again and again. I strive to display the fantastically varied colours and textures of the natural world in my practice. Through my work, I combine history and modernity. I intertwine traditional calligraphy ink, which has been used for thousands of years for paintings in Asia, with the very modern medium of liquid acrylic ink. It is this juxtaposition of old and new that excites me. Using two different water-based mediums, I am able to create a sense of movement and energy in my paintings. I want my work to leap off the paper and grab the viewer and transport them to a beautiful serene place.
