Original Abstract Colourful Modern Acrylic and Ink Artwork - Lustre 8 - Emerald and Peridot
Highlights: I am driven by a need to create. I’m happiest when I’m creating something beautiful – something that inspires, lifts up and brings joy and colour to the world. Something that hopefully others love to look at and gives them joy. All my original paintings are packed carefully, are signed on the back and front (the purely abstract paintings are signed only on the back to allow for them to be displayed vertically or horizontally) and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This painting is size 56 cm x 76 cm (or about 22 inches x 30 inches). A frame size 70 cm x 90 cm would work well. For more details about my inspiration, medium, and signature style, please read on.
Inspiration: Since I was a child, I have collected all sorts of stones, seashells, corals, sand, and pebbles. I love feeling connected to nature through collecting such beachcombing finds. I’ve spent countless happy hours searching for agates along the shores of Lake Superior in the USA or looking for a particularly interesting seashell or fossil in Ireland. And of course, I love gemstones. Of course, partly I am inspired by the gemstone colours – and I find it fascinating that many gemstones (a perfect example being lapis lazuli) used to be ground down into powder to make the necessary pigment for artists hundreds of years ago. But I also find their formation fascinating, as I’m a bit of a geology fan. And lastly, I find meaning in the diversity of gemstones found in the natural world – that an emerald can have lots of different shades of green. That many gems (amethysts, sapphires and others), actually naturally occur in a multitude of colours. And so for this painting, I was inspired by my love of gemstones - their circular shape, their colour saturation and their iridescence (shimmer, pearlescence, and of course, lustre). Emeralds are well known for showcasing a variety of greens, from the deep forest green to the lighter leaf greens. Peridots are known for the lime green (some call it sunny or happy green) hue that they display.
Medium / Style: I strive to create artwork that is beautiful and inspiring. Artwork that transports the viewer into another world. Art that is calming and serene but also full of life and energy. My particular style of work has developed over the years based on my combining two radically different yet similar mediums – the old and the new. The old is calligraphy ink, which has a long tradition of hundreds of years particularly in Asia and has a fabulous ink rich black colour that moves with the water so well. My other medium is quite new – liquid acrylic ink – it’s a specialty ink that has been specially formulated based on acrylic paint to work with water better than normal acrylic paint. The end result is that my signature style has lots of movement from the interaction of the inks and the water. I adore strong colours that jump out of the painting and grab attention. The bolder the better! This artwork is created on luxury heavyweight Fabriano watercolour paper which has a rough texture that enables me to create some wonderful patterns and textures with the inks and water.
