Inspiration:

This original mixed media artwork entitled “Sunset Over the Red Cliffs” is part of my Gold Lust series featuring various metal leaf (gold leaf and silver leaf) alongside my traditional water-based media artwork.

I love nature and its ability to transform and inspire us. To get outside of our own daily lives and our own individual problems and to think bigger.  To rejuvenate us – mind, body and soul.  I have been lucky enough to see some wonderful landscapes during my travels to more than 50 countries, and my favourites are my travels to East Asia, the American Southwest, Ireland and parts of the UK (such as the Lake District and Dartmoor).  I love landscapes that have loads of personality – a big dramatic sky (the stormier the better), and lots of interest on the ground – whether it’s meadows in bloom or forests.  Or as I have explored in this painting, bare stark landscapes that showcase tones of brown, russet, gold, bronze and copper.

Medium / Style:

I strive to create artwork that is beautiful and inspiring.  Artwork that transports the viewer into another world.  Art that is calming and serene but also full of life and energy.  My particular style of work has developed over the years based on my combining two radically different yet similar mediums – the old and the new.  The old is calligraphy ink, which has a long tradition of hundreds of years particularly in Asia and has a fabulous ink rich black colour that moves with the water so well.  My other medium is quite new – liquid acrylic ink – it’s a specialty ink that has been specially formulated based on acrylic paint to work with water better than normal acrylic paint.  The end result is that my signature style has lots of movement from the interaction of the inks and the water.  I adore strong colours that jump out of the painting and grab attention.  The bolder the better!  This artwork is created on luxury heavyweight Fabriano watercolour paper which has a rough texture that enables me to create some wonderful patterns and textures with the inks and water.  Once I create the raw material painting, then I cut up the painting into circles.  I then use those circles to create a unique collage on wood panel and include metal leaf (gold leaf, silver leaf, copper leaf) to add a warm glow to the artwork.  The artwork is on wooden panel and  is protected by varnish so it does not need to be framed or glazed and is ready to hang as is.
